Five Ways You Can Support Non profits Today

Getting involved in your community is a great way to make a difference and support causes that are dear to your heart. The more we come together and support non profit organisations, the better our communities can become. Whether you’re an individual or part of a team of people interested in giving back, you can help organisations in your area achieve their goals. Of course, you don’t have to limit your efforts to your neighbourhood – non profits around the world have made it easier than ever to get involved remotely. No matter your location or area of interest, these five tips can help you take action and make the world a better place today:

Join the Conversation

Sharing social media posts is one of the easiest ways to get involved with a cause you care about. Most non profit organisations have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Simply following these pages and sharing your favourite posts with friends is a great way to spread the word about the organisation and its goals. Sharing, liking and commenting takes very little effort, but this kind of engagement helps raise awareness and get more eyes on the non profit’s mission.

Want to go the extra mile? Join the organisation’s mailing list to stay updated on their efforts and guidance on how to get involved in upcoming events. Forward especially important or interesting emails to friends and encourage them to join the mailing list, too. You never know who might have a connection to a valuable resource from which the non profit might benefit.

Volunteer Your Time

Most non profit organisations are short on cash and on personnel. With every spare dollar going towards the larger mission, there’s often little room in the budget for staffing. Many organisations rely on volunteers for their daily operations. Those volunteers become even more important when it comes time to run a big event or fundraiser. If you’re eager to get involved, check the organisation’s website for volunteer opportunities.

Before you decide on which non profit to volunteer with, consider your personal passions and favourite causes. If you’re passionate about education, for instance, you may want to consider a non profit like Reality Changers. They provide mentorship, academic support, and financial assistance for youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. Help out by tutoring high school students, pitching in at annual fundraising events, or host a food drive – the choice is yours.

Some non profits require a weekly commitment from their volunteers. Others offer frequent opportunities and one-off chances to get involved. Even if you can’t commit to a weekly volunteer shift, it’s worth asking about opportunities to help out. Remote volunteer positions may allow you to complete important administrative tasks for the organisation from the comfort of your living room.

Recruit Others to Volunteer

Think of the ten people you know best. Your partner, your siblings, your best friends – they’re all potential allies in your effort to support your favourite non profit. If you recruit even one person from your social circle to get involved, you’ll essentially double your own efforts to give back. If they go on to recruit another friend, who then recruits another person, the impact continues to multiply.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, but it’s also a fantastic way to deepen the bonds you have with your friends and family. A day of pitching in together can create lasting memories and a deep, shared sense of satisfaction. Even if you can’t convince your buddies to join you for every volunteer opportunity, a single afternoon of helping out can do a world of good.

Attend Events and Fundraisers

If you’re short on time and can’t commit to regular volunteer shifts, make a plan to attend various events and fundraisers put on by your favourite non profit, such as a Charity Challenge. These events help spread awareness, solicit donations, and further the cause. Not so coincidentally, such events can be a lot of fun, too! From adventure treks to dance parties and formal galas, there are non profit events and fundraisers of every kind. Bring a friend, donate to the cause, and have a blast – what’s not to love?

Some fundraisers require tickets to get in the door. Even if you can’t typically volunteer for the organisation, ask if you can help out selling tickets ahead of the event. It’s an easy way to help out and convince your friends to join you for a fun activity.

Raise Funds and Donations

Donating to non profits is perhaps the easiest way to get involved. Most organisations are in constant need of fundraising to operate. A one-off donation is great, but consider a monthly gift if you can – regular support can mean a world of difference for non profit staffers. Raise funds by organising a collection among your co-workers, participating in a sponsored event, or sharing your passion for the mission online.

Money isn’t the only thing you can donate. Many non profits require supplies, special tools, event spaces, and even food to support their mission. Check in with your local non profit to see what is needed most.
