    Experience Australia’s rugged coastal wilderness through one of the best kept secrets on the NSW South Coast. 

     

    The Sapphire Coast is a gateway to enchanting coastal forests, sparkling estuaries and secluded beaches. Discover historic lighthouses, untouched coastlines and ancient geological formations as you trek with a small group of like-minded people led by expert local guides. Stay in comfortable accommodation and enjoy freshly prepared meals featuring local seasonal produce.

     

    Your adventure starts in the seaside community of Tathra, where you’ll visit the picturesque historical-listed Tathra Wharf and the magnificent surroundings of Bournda and Mimosa National Parks, before continuing south to Ben Boyd National Park and Green Cape Lighthouse.

     

    Watch as sea eagles soar above the crystalline waters and keep your eyes peeled for signs of humpback whales, who are known to frequent this stunning coastline to feed and nurse before heading to Antarctic waters. Once on the Light to Light Walk, you’ll explore rugged cliff tops to open coastal heath and woodlands filled with unique flora and fauna, geology and landscapes with reminders of early European settlement.

    Itinerary

    Day 1: Welcome to Tathra
    Upon arrival, you will be met by our friendly local guide at Merimbula airport and transferred to Tathra Beach House for the beginning of your tour. The rest of the day is spent at your leisure, soak in all this charming town has to offer, from locally brewed beer to fresh oysters, this jewel of the South Coast is sure to impress. Check in to your accommodation located right across the street from Tathra beach! Grab a coffee and scroll along the sand while keeping your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins. Tonight's welcome dinner (at own expense) will be held at a local restaurant,  where you will be able to get to know your fellow travellers.

    Day 2: Tathra - Mimosa Rocks NP Walk
    After a relaxing morning, you will meet your local guide at the reception of Tathra Beach House, where the first day of your trek begins. We’ll head north along the beach to Mogareeka and then onto Fords Headland; an old farming property that was given to Parks in the 1970s. From here you will then head down to historic Moon Bay and onwards to Wajurda Point lookout taking in the impressive Nelsons Bay. After descending down to the bay through unique vegetation you will prepare to cross the lagoon (waist deep, we have kayaks to help with the crossing if required). After drying off we walk the deserted Cowdroys beach, with a short section back through the spotted gum forest and onwards through the sand dunes to Middle Lagoon and Middle beach. Here we enter the forest again following the coast north to Bithry Inlet, where you can explore the ruins of an old property with links to the Myer department store. After we transfer back to your accommodation where we will enjoy a wholesome meal made with local seasonal produce. 

     

    (Today's itinerary direction will depend on the wind and could be done in reverse - Bithry to Mogareeka)

    Day 3: Kangarutha track to Tathra Hotel
    This morning we have breakfast in our rooms before heading south to the mouth of Wallagoot Lake, where we will explore Wallagoot Gap; a small secluded beach set in a gap in the rocks. We then walk the Kangarutha Track, exploring rocky bays and watching for whales heading south out to sea. By mid afternoon, we will pass through Kianinny Bay in Tathra and onwards around the headland to the historic Tathra Hotel for a cheeky drink before strolling back to your accommodation for dinner.

    Day 4: Tathra to Hobart Beach and Sandy Creek Loop
    After a good night's sleep, we will head off to Hobart Beach and walk around the Sandy Creek Loop. We head south to the mouth of Bournda Lagoon then onto a coastal Melaleuca forest that leads us inland to Sandy Creek crossing before following the creek back to the coast at the Lagoon, along this section of walk we will see plenty of water birds and hopefully some Gippsland Water Dragons. After returning to Tathra, you have the option to shower before we enjoy some local wine and dinner before falling asleep to the sound of waves.

    Day 5: Boyd’s Tower to Saltwater Creek
    After packing our bags, we will enjoy breakfast in our rooms before jumping on the bus and heading South to Ben Boyd NP (1hr 15mins) where we begin walking the iconic Light to Light walk. We will explore Boyd’s Tower and hear stories of its history. After enjoying views across Twofold Bay, we will begin walking South, through changing vegetation and secret rocky coves learning about the incredible geology of the area and the flora and fauna we witness along the way. We finish our walk at the rugged beach where Saltwater Creek flows into the sea. This is where we will spend the night, with our camp set up for our arrival. Dinner around the fire and some star gazing before heading to bed letting the sound of the surf lull us to sleep.

    Day 6: Bittangabee Bay to Saltwater Creek
    Rising to the sounds of the surf we enjoy breakfast before transferring out to Bittangabee Bay where we continue our journey along the Light to Light walk. This time we head North, around the creek feeding the bay and out along the spectacular sea cliffs. We will  stop and observe the impact the 2020 bushfires have had on the area and learn about how different species cope with the natural disaster. Highlights include the incredible geology of the area, and the rugged Hegartys Bay before heading back to camp.

    Trekking distance: 9km



    Day 7: Bittangabee Bay to Green Cape Lighthouse — Farewell
    From Bittangabee Bay, we meander through open grassy woodlands to experience varying and new vegetation we have not yet explored. After crossing a few small creeks we emerge out onto the open coastal heath, keeping our eyes peeled for the elusive Eastern Ground Parrot. Wildflowers will catch our attention and the sprawling views along the cape will be sure to impress. We pass the Lye-e-moon cemetery and a reminder of the tragic shipwrecks of the days of early maritime. After enjoying lunch on route, we will arrive back at Green Cape Lighthouse, the beacon at the end of our journey along the Sapphire Coast. After exploring the area we will transfer back to Merimbula, arriving at around 4pm – please book flights from 5.00pm. We can spend our time over lunch celebrating our achievements of the last few days.
