Trip at a glance

Join UN Women Australia in South Australia for the journey-of-a-lifetime across the ancient Ikara–Flinders Ranges, to advocate for the rights of women and girls across Afghanistan!

This is your chance to leave your worries behind and immerse yourself in the dramatic beauty of the Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park, known for its stunning scenery, fascinating geological history, rich cultural diversity and array of native wildlife.

Expert guides will lead you across this ancient landscape, through rugged mountain ranges, towering cliffs, spectacular gorges and stony creeks. You’ll hike sections of the famous Heysen Trail and visit various renowned landmarks, including Wilpena Pound, Mount Remarkable National Park, Brachina Gorge and Alligator Gorge.

Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to spot myriad native Australian wildlife, including emus, kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles and birds such as the brightly-coloured mallee ringneck parrot and the mighty wedge-tailed eagle. Your evenings will be spent at Rawnsley Park – a working sheep station where you can enjoy all the creature comforts after a hard day’s hike, with the added benefit of outdoor fires to relax around and stargaze with like-minded travellers.

Most significantly, this is your chance to travel with purpose, and create real change in people’s lives – and in yourself. As you discover South Australia’s scenic beauty, you’ll raise funds to ensure women and girls aren’t left behind in humanitarian efforts across Afghanistan. Your efforts will help UN Women Australia advocate for the rights of girls to an education, ensure women have access to livelihoods, and continue working with partners to provide services to women fleeing violence.

You’ll walk away with treasured moments and the knowledge that you have been a part of something life-changing! We hope you can join us on this journey.

Give back

Over the last 18 months, the women and girls of Afghanistan have suffered a dramatic reversal of rights. The sudden and drastic political change put severe limitations on women and girls’ exercise of basic freedoms, including access to education and workplaces.

Girls above sixth grade have been denied an education and, according to women civil society organisations and activists, women are now unable to drive, take public transport or move freely.

Due to safety concerns and fear of reprisal, women’s shelters run by UN Women-supported partner organisations have temporarily closed. Women’s leadership at all levels in government has been suppressed and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in the country has been closed. Restrictions have been placed on civic space, including the operating environment for women-led civil society organisations. Many civil society organisation leaders and women human rights defenders have had no choice but to leave the country or go into hiding.

Such constraints increasingly limit women’s ability to earn a living, access healthcare and education, seek protection, escape situations of violence, exercise their individual and collective rights and act with agency. This comes at a time when there is almost universal poverty in the country. More than half of the population needs some form of humanitarian assistance, and an entire generation is threatened by food insecurity and malnutrition.

Women’s rights in Afghanistan need to move in one direction, and that is forward.

The funds you raise on Trek for Rights 2023 will support UN Women’s work on the ground in Afghanistan to ensure women and girls are not left behind in humanitarian efforts and able to access life-saving services.
