    Embark on a eight-day Sumatran Jungle Adventure that promises an unforgettable exploration of the untamed wilderness of Gunung Leuser National Park. Your journey begins with a thrilling trek through the Sumatran Jungle with the prospect of encountering wild orangutans. 

     

    The heart of the adventure involves challenging jungle treks, witnessing breathtaking vistas, and camping beneath the stars, all while learning about medicinal plants and spotting fascinating wildlife. Your journey continues in Tangkahan, where you'l explore the lush rainforest, and engage in local conservation efforts. Along the way, enjoy sightings of beautiful butterflies and venture into awe-inspiring caves.

     

    Your adventure includes a tree planting activity and a rendezvous with a local conservation unit. You'll then return to Medan for a well-deserved rest and a farewell dinner.

     

    Finally, bid farewell to Sumatra, leaving with cherished memories of a unique adventure filled with wildlife encounters, challenging treks, cultural immersion, and the untamed beauty of Sumatra's wilderness.

    Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrival in Medan – Journey to Bukit Lawang
    Touch down at Medan Kuala Namu International Airport on an early morning flight. After smoothly clearing immigration and customs, our experienced guide and friendly driver will be eagerly waiting for you in the arrivals hall. From there, we'll whisk you away to Bukit Lawang, nestled within the pristine Gunung Leuser National Park. The drive lasts around 3-4 hours, taking you through picturesque landscapes dotted with plantations and villages. Depending on the season, you might even have the chance to stop at local homes that craft bamboo and traditional roofing or explore the locals' fruit and spice gardens, featuring delicacies like snake fruits, mangos, durian, ginger, lemongrass, peanuts, and galingale.

    Once you arrive in Bukit Lawang, check in at the Eco Lodge for an overnight stay.

    Day 2: Jungle Trek to Camp 1
    Bid adieu to the comfort of your hotel as you embark on your day's journey through the rugged terrain of the National Park. The day begins with a steep incline, but the breathtaking views along the way will make it all worthwhile. Rest stops are available upon request.

    During your trek, your knowledgeable guide will introduce you to the jungle's medicinal plants, which have been used by the local people for centuries.

    Upon reaching the first night's campsite, you'll learn how to set up camp in the Sumatran jungle and help build a fire for a delicious dinner. The local guide is an expert in 'camp cooking,' ensuring a dinner under the stars amidst the symphony of jungle sounds.

    While the possibility of encountering wild or semi-wild orangutans is ever-present, remember to always heed the guide's instructions and avoid approaching these majestic creatures.

    Lunch will be enjoyed en route, and dinner will be savoured at the camp.

    Trekking distance: 6 hours (challenging)

    Day 3: Trek to Camp 2
    As you become accustomed to the sights and sounds of the jungle, continue your journey deeper into the lush wilderness, learning from your guide how to identify the various animal sounds.

    Upon reaching the camp, you'll have the opportunity to learn traditional fishing methods (if river conditions permit) and try your hand at catching a fish for dinner. After a day of adventure, enjoy a peaceful night's sleep to prepare for the next day's challenges.

    Lunch will be served en route, and dinner will be a delightful affair at the camp.

    Trekking distance: 6 hours (moderate)

    Day 4: Camp 2 – Return to Bukit Lawang via Wampu River
    As you become accustomed to the sights and sounds of the jungle, continue your journey deeper into the lush wilderness, learning from your guide how to identify the various animal sounds.

    Upon reaching the camp, you'll have the opportunity to learn traditional fishing methods (if river conditions permit) and try your hand at catching a fish for dinner. After a day of adventure, enjoy a peaceful night's sleep to prepare for the next day's challenges.

    Lunch will be served en route, and dinner will be a delightful affair at the camp.

    Trekking distance: 6 hours (moderate)

    Day 5: From Bukit Lawang to Tangkahan
    Following breakfast, a local jeep will collect you for your journey to Tangkahan, the Elephant Lodge. The drive takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours and offers glimpses of stunning mountain landscapes and picturesque plantations along the way. You might even spot long-tailed macaques playing by the riverside. A stop on the route provides an opportunity to stretch your legs and savour a fresh coconut drink.

    Upon arriving in Tangkahan, you'll cross the Batang River via a suspension bridge and embark on a 15-minute walk to reach your lodge. 

    The rest of the day is free in Tangkahan. Stroll along the banks of Buluh River to witness thousands of enchanting butterflies fluttering by the riverside. You can also visit a small waterfall in the rainforest for another memorable experience.

    Transfer distance: 2.5 hours

    Day 6: Tangkahan Exploration
    Today, you'll delve further into the Leuser National Park, embarking on a relatively moderate trek with some inclines and exhilarating descents. With the guidance of our experts and porters, we'll venture deep into the forest, crossing rivers and streams, and observing the rich natural environment with its diverse flora, medicinal plants, butterflies, monkeys, and birds. After approximately 4 hours of trekking, you'll arrive at Kalong cave, where your local guide will lead you through stunning stalactites and stalagmites and introduce you to a small river that flows through the cave.

    Lunch will be served on the banks of the Batang River, where you can also indulge in some swimming and hot springs nearby. Return to your accommodation by tubing down the river, providing a unique perspective of the rainforest.

    Upon arrival at the lodge, take a well-deserved rest, followed by dinner.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
    Trekking distance: 4 hours (moderate)

    Day 7: Tree Planting in Tangkahan - Return to Medan
    In the morning, seize the opportunity to partake in a tree planting activity. Starting from your lodge, you'll cross the river and embark on a short trek to an area that was damaged by illegal logging around 15 years ago. This young forest is in need of your help to grow rapidly, and you'll contribute by planting local tropical trees like Meranti, Damar, Mahang, Kruing, and Mahoni. Some trees will also be planted on the riverbank to prevent erosion and landslides. After the tree planting, you'll return to your lodge.

    Following lunch, you'll meet with the CRU (Conservation Response Unit) team, a local community-based conservation unit dedicated to protecting nature and elephants in Tangkahan.

    Prepare for checkout and return to Medan. Upon arrival, freshen up with a hot shower and enjoy a farewell dinner to celebrate your unforgettable journey.

    Day 8: Departure Day
    Make the most of your final morning in Medan with some independent leisure time, savouring the last moments in this beautiful country. Today, we bid a fond farewell to Sumatra as we say our goodbyes to the local guides and bring our remarkable journey to a close. A private group transfer will take you back to the airport for your return flights.

    As you depart, carry with you the cherished memories of this soulful adventure, the breathtaking landscapes, and the incredible wildlife you encountered along the way.
