The responsible travel movement is making waves with more and more travellers becoming social and nature-conscious. This movement is more than welcomed with our present environmental conditions, in which everyone has to play their part in conserving nature as much as possible for the next generations to be able to enjoy this gorgeous planet. It might not be a big step towards fighting pollution or global warming, however, staying at an eco-friendly hotel is a step in the right direction to become a responsible traveller. Here are a few of our favourite eco-friendly hotels around the globe! 

Gili Lankanfusi – Maldives Islands

Without a doubt, the most luxurious hotel in the Maldives, is the Gili Lankanfushi.  It’s more than just the pearl of hotels and accommodation in the Maldives, it’s also one of the eco-friendliest hotels on the planet right now! Besides being built entirely from responsibly harvested wood and organic natural materials, the hotel has also partnered with EarthCheck. EarthCheck acts as seal of approval, so all  practices within the hotel; from washing towels to any other hotel-specific activities are in accordance to protect and conserve nature. The rule of the ‘R’ is holy at the Gili where they recycle, reuse and reduce in order to keep the environment pristine and unspoilt. 

The Scarlet – Cornwall

Perhaps the eco-friendliest luxury hotel in the United Kingdom, The Scarlet hotel in Mawgan Porth, really takes it to the next level. Their website includes an entire list with 101 ways to prove just how eco-chic the hotel is. Being built completely in touch with the environment and only with recyclable and sustainable materials, the waste is closely monitored and kept at a very low level through state-of-the-art equipment such as: a biomass boiler, water recycling systems, and harvesting of rainwater from roofs. And if you think that’s already eco-friendly, wait until you see the pool, it contains all-natural water with a reed bed that acts as a filtration system to ensure a high-quality water level.

Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley

Just hours from Sydney shelters a stunning natural environment and one of the country’s most luxurious resorts, Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley. With 1618-hectare once cleared to run cattle this property is now a dedicated wildlife reserve, working to protect endangered species and rehabilitate the land. Thousands of native trees – including a grove of rare Wollemi pines – have been planted to regenerate the valley and encourage the return of wildlife. Petit St Vincent – Saint Vincent Island

We’re talking about a private island in the Caribbean, Petit St Vincent is paradise on earth! It goes without saying that it bears huge respect for the environment and marine life surrounding it, a thing recognised even by National Geographic as one of the leaders in sustainability. The cottages are individual and are built using only local materials, and blend perfectly with the tropical island’s look and feel. The island has its own desalination factory that provides high-quality drinking water and they even went as far as building a water bottling plant to avoid the use of plastic.

The restaurant serves from their own garden offering a farm-to-fork experience. Besides healthy meals for the visitors, it provides a great method to keep the kids entertained and engaged on where their food comes from, as they are invited to join in activities such as collecting eggs from the chickens.
